On this day, 1993, Dean Jones committed a grave mistake.

He asked Curtly Ambrose to take his wristband off.

He paid the price, as did Australia.

This was first of the best-of-three finals of the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup.

West Indies scored 239/8.

Richie Richardson opened bowling with Ian Bishop and Phil Simmons.

So Ambrose could not have been in a great mood.

Mark Taylor and David Boon had added 41. Then Boon tried to cut Ambrose and was caught behind.

Jones walked out to bat (with a broken thumb).
+
He would be facing Ambrose.

He took his guard, but almost immediately went up to umpire Terry Prue.

After a brief discussion, Prue asked Ambrose to take off the wristband off his right hand.

The white wristband made the white ball difficult to spot, Jones said.

(I think Jones had a point, but I also think he should not have messed with Ambrose)

Ambrose was not amused.

Now Richardson had to intervene.

He convinced Ambrose that the best possible retaliation would be with the ball.

Taylor was not comfortable with this at all:
+
"I've got two kids, what are you doing?"

"That could generate an extra yard or two to his pace," said Richie Benaud on air.

"The broken thumb might get a severe bit of pasting," Ian Chappell agreed.

The next ball was short and very fast. Jones kept his bat out of the way.
+
The next one hit Jones on the knee-roll. Not out, said Prue.

Jones somehow escaped Ambrose when he fell to Kenny Benjamin, but it did not matter.

There was no stopping Ambrose that day. He finished with 5/32.

West Indies won by 25 runs.

Then won the second final, too.
+
Ambrose took 3/26 and was named Player of the finals.

As it was often the case in those days, the ODI tournament and Test series overlapped.

Australia had been up 1-0 after three Tests.

Now, in the fourth, at Adelaide, West Indies won by 1 run.
+
Ambrose took 6/74 and 4/46 and was named Player of the Match.

In the fifth, at Perth, they won by an innings to take the series 2-1.

Ambrose took 7/25 (including that famous spell of 7/1) and 2/54.

He was named Player of the Match again.

And Player of the Series.

Remember the Hogwarts motto, "draco dormiens nunquam titillandus"?

That translates to "never tickle a sleeping dragon".

Jones realised that too late. Too late. https://twitter.com/ProfDeano/status/820904917288112128
