Folks are asking for info about SC Senate Bill 1 which bans abortion in South Carolina. This is a bill in the state legislature, not in Congress, so Graham, Scott, Wilson, Norman, Timmons, Duncan, Rice and Mace have nothing to do with this bill. https://www.scstatehouse.gov/sess124_2021-2022/bills/1.htm
This bill requires ultrasound for all women who want an abortion. If a "heartbeat" can be heard, no abortion can happen. Though there's no heart yet, you can hear electrical activity via transvaginal ultrasound as early as six weeks in small women, a little later in larger women.
Most women don't know they're pregnant at 6 weeks unless their periods are like clockwork and they're *trying* to get pregnant. At 6 weeks pregnant, you're only 2 weeks late for your period. You may not even get a positive pregnancy test until a week after you missed your period.
That gives you one week to get an appointment. That's just not how we women live our lives. This will be an all-out abortion ban in SC, but some legislators are upset that it's not cruel enough. They want eggs and sperm to have constitutional protections.
There are no exceptions for victims of rape and incest. If you're pregnant following a sexual assault -- oh, well. Continue that pregnancy and the reminder of your trauma for 9 months.
There are no exceptions for lethal fetal anomalies. If you get a devastating diagnosis at your 20-week ultrasound that reveals the worst news ever - no brain, no spine, chromosomal abnormalities inconsistent with life - sorry, but continue that pregnancy as folks rub your belly.
The ONLY exception for a legal abortion is if you are pregnant and death is imminent. You literally have to be dying - just in danger isn't enough. How many people want to wait around until you're near death before saving the life of the wife or daughter they love? Not me.
