of course, that's not really the case anymore, but the fact remains: make your thing not only solve a problem but do it so easily, so quickly, and so transparently that you're not even aware there was a problem in the first place, and you've already won.
the best devices are like God: you never even know they exist.
oh, and people should be able to easily spray-paint it and put stickers on it. this is of the essence.
