A lot of environmentalists are expressing their frustration for being "forced" to be an intersectional advocate + consider racism + other forms of bigotry now that enviro. justice is becoming more commonplace - but I find that frustration really misguided and hurtful.
No one is being "forced" to think intersectionally, but BIPOC, LGBTQ+ communities and the younger generation want people they look up to to fight against ALL systems of oppression, not just a select few.
I think those that feel this frustration are really upset because they no longer will be able to have the same platform/respect/wealth if people realize how hypocritical it is (and hollow) that their advocacy for the planet does not include lifting up marginalized ppl + voices
And no - you don't have to suddenly become a racial justice advocate, you can still advocate for issues that are near + dear to your heart, but you should at least acknowledge + condemn racism + bigotry, because if you don't - what kind of environmentalism is that?
BIPOC now have the choice to amplify environmentalists that represent them and don't have to settle for "activists" educators or online creators that fail to acknowledge the importance of their livelihoods. That's why certain people's followings + even overall respect is dropping
Nobody is being "silenced", but BIPOC + allies are empowered to give platforms to those who truly reflect our values, in their entirety. The status quo of environmentalism IS changing - fast.
So - do you HAVE to suddenly uproot your environmentalism + take a deep dive into systemic racism? No, you don't HAVE to. But what kind of environmentalism are you participating in if it only advocates for a better future for wealthy + white people? What about justice for all?
Lastly - know any discomfort you may feel for being called to learn about systemic inequality is likely much less than those who are actively facing environmental + social injustices daily. Discomfort is a part of learning, don't let it make you cynical or jaded. Just get to work
