Rosanne Boyland, a 34-year-old Trump supporter who was killed during the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, appears to have died amid a crush of pro-Trump rioters during their attempt to fight through a police line, according to videos we reviewed: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/15/us/rosanne-boyland-capitol-riot-death.html
Boyland’s presence in these widely circulated videos had gone unnoticed until now, and the manner of her death had previously been unclear. But the videos show her body just outside a door on the Capitol’s west side that pro-Trump rioters had violently rushed.
The Times matched details of Boyland’s clothes and backpack from the videos to a picture of her taken earlier that day to determine that it was her. In this thread, I’ll detail how the fatal rush on the door where she died unfolded.
At around 2:30 p.m., rioters on the west side of the Capitol force their way through Metropolitan Police and head toward a door and tunnel traditionally used by presidents when they emerge for their inauguration. As soon as they pass the door and enter the tunnel, a crush begins.
Around 2:50 p.m., @JonFarinaPhoto begins filming. His video shows the mob massed together in a dangerous crush, attacking officers and trying to force them back. Both sides fill the air with chemical irritant sprays they fire back and forth.
At 4:09 p.m., the mob makes another push into the doorway. The police push back, and the mob tumbles out. Boyland's friend Justin Winchell is visible in a blue hooded sweatshirt. He can be seen pulling people away, appearing to search for Boyland.
[Content warning: Boyland's body is partially visible in this clip] It's unclear if Boyland was alive at this time, but two rioters launched a new attack on the police at 4:17 p.m., making it virtually impossible for officers to give aid, even if they were able to notice her.
Two men pull Boyland out, and others try to resuscitate her. At the top of the steps, another man can be seen negotiating with the police to get Boyland assistance. The men carry her back to the police line, even as other rioters continue to throw poles at the officers.
Two witnesses recorded on video say they saw a woman be trampled in the tunnel. One man said she had no pulse when she was pulled out. Another said she was trapped beneath the mob, not breathing, for four minutes.
The @DCPoliceDept declined to confirm if it was Boyland in the videos but said its officers had responded to a medical emergency at the Capitol on Jan. 6 and found two @CapitolPolice officers performing CPR on Boyland, who was pronounced dead at a hospital at 6:09 p.m.
Boyland's sister, Lonna, who we hadn't been able to reach before publication, texted @NickAtNews: "As difficult as it was to read and watch the videos, I at least have some answers." https://twitter.com/NickAtNews/status/1350474737319866368
I want to note that this investigation might not have happened without a tip from Twitter user
@rachelzo, who noticed Boyland in the background of one of my tweets about a different story and sent me a DM. A result of the connected, open source environment we work in now.
One of Boyland's sisters tells an Atlanta TV station that the police still haven't given them details about Boyland's death. The Times investigation, she said, "is the most information we've come across so far." https://www.11alive.com/article/news/local/protests/nyt-kennesaw-woman-trampled-at-us-capitol-insurrection-later-died/85-51e1337a-8953-43bc-8583-f06fd5a3a161
