STUDENT MESSAGE 1: It is not the university that introduced your fees but the government. The government has decided not to reduce/subsidise your fees. They have not provided any meaningful support to maintain the quality, quantity and accessibility of tuition. https://twitter.com/michelledonelan/status/1350159981790830594
STUDENT MESSAGE 2: In fact, the government has repeatedly put hurdles into place to undermine student experience. Remember the govt telling you to go back to campus/halls & it was business as usual after lockdown 1? We knew it was a bad idea & we said so, but they pushed ahead.
STUDENT MESSAGE 3: "Get your refunds from unis" they say. You are very unlikely to get refunds as long as you were taught promised content. This is a massive time-waster for you & a distraction. (But do raise issues & complaints where appropriate - you deserve a good education!)
STUDENT MESSAGE 4: If you are an UG student paying your fees with a student loan, most of you *won't save any money* by getting a partial fee refund. This is because most students will never fully repay their loan. (But big damage to unis - probably redundancies.)
STUDENT MESSAGE 5: Rather than pushing responsibility to unis, the government could *actually support you* through this pandemic. E.g., how about a non-refundable grant recognising the extraordinary circumstance you are in, to cover any additional costs for online learning
STUDENT MESSAGE 6: I don't claim to know all staff/unis, but everyone I know genuinely cares about your learning, development & wellbeing. It's been a hard year & we are in emergency mode - we need to work together. Don't let the govt think we are your enemies!
