I’m doing Dry January and what you replace it with makes all the difference.

So here’s my rundown of alcohol free beers you can buy. Many promise so much and deliver so little. A rare few are genuinely class.
First point of order. Don’t settle for the 0% version of a mainstream lager. Your Becks Blues, your Peroni Liberos, your Prohibition Buds. They are piss. Aim higher.
FIRST CHOP YES (UK)
This is everything you could hop for in a 0%. That wasn’t a typo. This beer demanded I give it an Ancoats backdrop. Could only do a few before you’d find yourself with a neck beard and a podcast though. Not a session but scratches that IPA itch. 8/10
ERDINGER ALKOHOLFREI (GER)
Say what you like about The Germans, they know how not to have fun. The socks and sandals of beer. But lame and overpoweringly sweet. Like swimming through someone else’s perfume. Claims to be isotonic and full of vitamins. Give over. 2/10
LERVIG NO WORRIES (NOR)
Hazy and slightly sour. This beer made me sad as it’s a summer festival drink. You laugh at your mate lugging that coolbox from the car. But you’re soon glad he did. Must be served cold. Nice packaging. Plus its Norwegian so cooler than you are. 8/10
PAULANER WEISSBIER (GER)
Everything the Erdinger isn’t. Malty and drinkable, like old breakfast cereal but in the best way. Still an acquired taste but I could just about imagine sinking one of these in the queue for Tresor so it passes that test. 5.5/10
BREWDOG AF (SCO)
Bitter and lacking in depth. You’re “anti-establishment.” You reject lager as a personality trait. Your bought the fake shares in these gimmick merchants. You reckon Count Dankula was harshly treated. You’re trying to show her you can change. You buy this. 3/10
LUCKY SAINT (UK)
The absolute don of alcohol free. A pilsner’s pilsner. Proper head. Fresh hit. Familiar beery aftertaste. Lucky Saint make this and only this. Definition of do 1 thing well. Literally had 30 of these since 1st Jan. Easy. 10/10
