Angelo Esposito owned a general contractor company based out of the Harlem Office Building (1958) at 1515 North Harlem in Oak Park. He was responsible for a number of midcentury apartments in the Chicagoland area that were usually decorated with limestone carvings. @53viroqua
Esposito & Company’s best known building is “The Alexandrian” on Division in River Forest. Built in 1956, they feature plaques on the facade - “The Three Wise Monkeys: See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil.” It has a twin at 5516 South Pulaski near Chicago’s Midway Airport.
In a 1956 Chicago Tribune article, Esposito says there’s no reason for the monkeys other than to generate buzz & sculptures were added to his previous developments. No mention is made of who did the actual designs. Here’s another one of his buildings at 1305 N. Harlem in OP.
In 1960 just as his company was filing for bankruptcy, Esposito built an apartment at the corner of Pleasant & Kenilworth in Oak Park, and again like most of his buildings it has a limestone carving on the facade.
Earlier @53viroqua shared her pic of 1519 Bonnie Brae, River Forest built in 1957. (This is a real estate photo) I suspect Esposito was involved w/this one as it’s located a block from his office, dates from when his company was working, & features his trademark limestone plaque.
