Does anyone else get told a lot of unsolicited and mostly very sad personal stories by different opticians, plumbers, electricians and roofers (just the men), prompted by you impersonating a therapist by making small talk or offering a cup of tea
Me: is everything ok?
Man I just met: <divorce, baby loss, period of homelessness as a teenager, wife’s traumatic birth>
Me: I meant with your tea
I don’t think I’m an especially easy person to talk to, I think men have so few, so very few places to talk about their feelings, that a one to one space with even a tiny opening for discussion is where it happens - wherever that is
Anyway I just had my opticians appointment again so it’s my annual reflection on poor mental health support for men in a patriarchal society k thx
Also - men should all be talking to each other about this stuff and seeing their GP to find the best support.
It’s a lot of work to hear it, and sometimes women are knackered and they just need their eyes tested or their boiler fixed.
