Can we talk about how it's not super inclusive to ask people to submit a video to apply for everything now? #stammering #stuttering #disability #fundraising
Firstly, this is two-fold with trends in fundraising - both when applying for funding; and for professional development opportunities like speaking at conference.
Secondly, in both instances it does provide an alternative to those who would rather speak about their cause, project, session idea etc. I'm not negating that positivity aspect of inclusion.
But, it should be an option and not a requirement.

(Thirdly) Why? Because it AUTOMATICALLY creates barriers to applying for people who 1) do not have the digital skills 2) have a #communication disability or difference.
As a person who #stammers and a #Fundraisers I sometimes haven't applied or was v hesitant to apply bc of is.

Barriers: For those who apply and have differences, recording a video takes more time & sometimes more mental and/or physical energy. (As a stammerer, this is an issue)
There may be additional planning or costs involved (for example, if a sign language interpreter is needed).

I can see that on the surface it seems like an accessible enough request in 2021: make a video.
But, let me tell you, on a day when every Single. Word. is hard to get out, it's not easy.
If we want true equity and representation in #fundraising we truly need to have options.
