I’ve tried to keep this account to my area of science only. People who know me, know that I have strong political opinions. In the face of the pandemic, and how it’s handled in most western countries, it’s time to take a stand. (1/5)
I am an infectious disease specialist and an immunologist. I understand math. The only way forward is to combine rapid vaccination with a Zero Covid elimination strategy. Lockdowns in the face of health care overload and huge death tolls are when we have failed.
You do not chose lockdown vs economy, you do not balance covid with your life and livelihood. You chose life and livelihood, and you eliminate Covid. It is possible, there are many successful countries in the world.
What am I doing? I talk to my non-science friends, my neighbours, my mummy friends, write for the (very) local paper. We have to do this as scientists. It’s important to take a stand.
