If i see one more "haha miyazaki so relatable" post imma blow the f*ck up. Ghibli movies are a goddamn treasure but miyazaki and takahata have a long history of being abusive with their workers and they are not you're "kawaii depressed japanese grandad" 1/3
Ghibli's producer, suzuki has spoken about miyazaki's habit of "breaking young talents" to the point of them quitting art altogether. Takahata has literally pushed someone to kill themselves and is probably far worse than miya. And no this is not a "necessity" to make great work.
There's juste something infuriating about all these "oh poor me i'm cursed with passion for art" coming from someone who destroyed literal generations of young passionated animators.
He's treatment of goro is absolutely disgusting as well if anyone wants to know more about it there's a great video about this subject from okada:
As many pointed out a lot of it isn't only miyazaki's fault but also japan's terrible work culture and it's a very fair point! It's also ok to continue the appreciation of miyazaki's work, i know i will always love his work! But there's always 2 side of the story in a studio.
OK one last point: I'm not trying to cancel miyazaki, it is a nuanced situation and we don't know everything. But i believe we can respect the man's talent while being critical of his actions. That doesn't mean i want his work to be "canceled".
Ok i'm going to mute and go to sleep. If i wake up tomorrow and i've become known for being "the dude responsible for canceling miyazaki" i'm gonna lose my mind. But i feel like some people should know about this so i'll try not to delete it (if i'm brave enough)
quick clarification Takahata did not push someone to suicide, my bad it was a death from overwork wich isn't much better tbh
