As a student, you can do it for much less. Here are my tips.
1. Ask for application fee waivers to all the schools you are applying to. Yes, even if they say they do not give.
2. Prioritize schools that give generous scholarships to Africans.

3. Look for fellowships that offer to cover things like airfare, feeding & accommodation. My bestie got one of those to cover her accommodation & feeding in California!
4. Once you get admitted start reaching out to professors for RA/TA roles.

Oh you don’t have to be “top of the class” to take advantage of any of these.
