**A PULSE OXIMETER CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE**

There’s a significant link between oxygen saturation levels and 30 day mortality rates in #COVID19

THREAD...
SILENT HYPOXIA in COVID-19:

-> Patients who UNKNOWINGLY have dangerously low oxygen levels with minimal symptoms.

- As symptoms are mild it can be VERY difficult to detect without a pulse oximeter
In patients with sats 92% or below:

Significant increase in mortality for EVERY DAY of delay in presentation

**EARLY DETECTION WILL DETERMINE MORTALITY AND SAVE LIVES**

Patients with silent hypoxia may need empowering to go to hospital as due to feeling relatively well they may lack insight to the severity of their condition

Groups at risk of late presentation:
- HCWs
- BAME background
Guide for using pulse oximeter:

1. Remove nail polish/fake nails
2. Ensure hands are warm
3. Rest for 5 mins prior to reading & take reading sat upright
4. Use middle/index finger (NOT EAR)
5. Ensure adequate battery life
Guide to interpreting saturation readings:

92% or BELOW
➡️ 999 or A&E within 1 HOUR

93-94%
➡️ Call GP or NHS 111

95% or above
➡️ Continue home monitoring

* guide is for patients with NORMAL baseline values

Thank you to @AHSNNetwork for
such a brilliant webinar on COVID Oximetry at home. Many learning points as above that have impacted my practice. https://twitter.com/wessexahsn/status/1343485617099972618
