1/ Today is our 20th Anniversary! A #recovery thread:

Beginning in 1993, a task force was appointed to explore the issues with homelessness in #WakeCounty. A 1997 Gap Analysis revealed that on any given night, over 1,900 people in Wake County were homeless.
2/ Of those folks, 65% had alcohol and other drug problems. At the time, there were no shelters in Wake County that served homeless individuals who were under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. #recovery
3/ As a result, law enforcement and EMS were confronted with increasing levels of public intoxication resulting in costly and ineffective transports to local hospitals (over $1.4 million to EMS and WakeMed in 1997).

There was a need for something different.

4/ Spearheaded by Linda Strother, a broad group of stakeholders was involved with exploring The Healing Place in Louisville as a model that could address these needs.

5/ Enter Maria Spaulding, Barabra Goodmon, and Fred Barber.

Together, these three original HT founders championed the effort to take this vision and turn it into a reality. #recovery
6/ Vital support was provided by Capitol Broadcasting, WakeMed, Wake County ABC Board, Wake County Government, and CP&L to jumpstart a $5.5 million dollar capital campaign to construct a 165-bed campus for men. #raleigh #recovery
7/ And on January 15th, 2001, after years of research, collaboration, planning, investment from the community, building, and tons of hard work, Healing Transitions - known as The Healing Place of Wake County - opened its doors to the community. #recovery
8/ The mission was simple: provide #recovery services on-demand, at no cost, for homeless, uninsured, and underserved individuals in Wake County, as many times as it takes.

That was 20 years ago, today.

9/ Between Day 1 and today (Day 7,306), Healing Transitions went on to open a second campus for women in 2006, and have provided live-saving #recovery services to over 20,000 unique individuals.
10/ We've also provided 1.6 million beds, served over 2.8 million meals, and have celebrated the completion of our long-term #recovery program for over 1,200 alumni.
11/ Along the way, the demand for our services steadily increased in those two decades. And thanks to you - our Recovery Village - we have been able to maintain providing services to meet the demand. #raleigh #recovery
12/ So we're asking you to join us this year as we celebrate our 20-year anniversary. All year long, we will be reflecting on milestones, telling stories, and celebrating the #recovery of folks who we've served from year one to year 20.
13/ We can't wait to show you what we have in store for 2021, and we are excited to serve the community for the next 20 years!
