Defunding: Thread.

I keep seeing things like defund the police and defund the BBC etc. Do people actually realise the implications of this? Defunding within a capitalist system does not mean they cease to exist, it merely means it transfers from public to private ownership. 1/9

The BBC in the hands of Murdoch press and other groups does not benefit the working class, it actually gives more power to the right. Instead of defunding we should be looking at restructuring and giving power of such to workers unions who actually represent the workers. 2/9

The idea of defunding the police is even worse. This results in private ownership over what can become a brutish force (more so than now). Police have access to weaponry, so now the capitalist classes hold power over those individuals who can use force as they wish. 3/9

They would still be backed by public money when they need it too, just look at Scotrail or Virgin as examples.

Now, they are not accountable the same way government is with the police. Now, if they wish to use deadly force who do we aim our focus? An employee or company? 4/9

The emphasis would no longer be on flawed government, so actually this benefits them. Can you imagine what the capitalist classes can do when they hold complete control and power of an elite force with unlimited power over the people? 5/9

The capitalist classes already rule over us and state apparatus such as the police are used to defend them, but can you imagine if they had it at their disposal in unlimited form? So that it was a means to attack as opposed to defense of their efforts? 6/9

Additionally, as mentioned, who then decides on whether weaponry is used? They will be able to implement weaponry through their lobbying power, just as they do with everything else. Anything dodgy they wish to get upto would then be manned with armed guards etc. 7/9

The police are a product of government and elitism right now but they are still accountable to the public as a public body. If they go private that disappears. So, while I share the enthusiasm to restructure the police, defunding does not end like many are imagining. 8/9

Too many people living like this is a utopia and defunding everything results in what's better for the public. We live under capitalism, when there is space to exploit something the capitalists will do exactly that.
