i dont think the ed is "real". the song title is "give it back", it's set in late fall/early winter which is when the devastating event of shibuya occurs, filming is associated with yuuji's technique of fake memories, midway through the op empty scenery is suddenly filled.
sorry. "*midway through the ed". anyways, I think, like the picnic at the end of kaikai kitan, this is an ideal we never get. I think students see happiness in their day to day lives but the title of the song is just a huge red flag for none of this actually happening
"give it back". give what back? why is the song in such a melancholy key, why is she singing with such desperation. for an ending about spending time with your friends it's such a sorrowful song. visual wise, the song is a group centric less stylized lost in paradise
"this is how we spend our days when we are not in class. this is how we relax together" so why is the song so fucking sad. why do we see yuuji so sparingly? why is this ending yuuji looking at his friends through a sepia tinted lense as we hear someone beg for something back
even more interesting, if this really is fake, then the song is contradictory. what's there to give back, considering none of it was real in the first place? yuuji isn't asking for his happiness once again, he's asking for the chance he lost long ago
