trying to explain that LA is being besieged by the virus right now not because “masks don’t work” but because we have a large urban poor population living in close quarters who all have jobs they can’t quit or stay home to do has been a lesson in Understanding American Racism
"$2000 to stay home!" was never going to work here when a massive portion of the population doesn't have SSNs to get the money, bank accounts to put it in, or jobs that will let them stay home
when the Palisades was burning down over the summer there was an ENTIRE Times article about how cleaning ladies still took 4 hour bus rides to show up at their jobs because they were afraid if they didn't show up to the BURNING NEIGHBORHOODS they'd be fired
and people think that it's a $2000 check that's making or breaking people staying home? not at all.
