Story time! (CW: childbirth, medical stuff)

During my second pregnancy I went to the doctor for a regular visit and they were like ma'am you are six centimeters dilated why are you here? Please go to the hospital like right now? https://twitter.com/trashcrumpet/status/1350053420942585856
I did not go to the hospital. Instead I went home, got some yarn, arranged for childcare for my toddler, set my blog to autopost, did some laundry, had a snack, packed a bag.

Then I went the hospital, where I explained that my contractions were 2 min apart and very intense.
The nurses were like LOL sure they are and sent me to hang out in a room, where I spent an hour or so doing a crossword puzzle, pestering nursing staff about the world series, calling my doula, and in general being very bored.
Then the OB arrived. The OB was sort of an infamous asshole but a good doctor and I was pregnant with twins, one of whom was transverse, and I was willing to put up with assholery in exchange for skill.

The OB full on yelled at me for...not acting like I was in pain.
How was anyone to know that I was in pain if I did not get dramatic about it? There are ways people are suppose to act when they're in pain! Why was I not doing that? Did I want to have a breech birth on the side of the road and BLEED TO DEATH??
So then I have a c-section which apparently everybody hates doing when you're about to have a vaginal birth but whatever, it was very boring and uneventful except for how everyone for the next 24 hours told me I shouldn't have been so calm when i arrived, it was MISLEADING
But the reason i was forcing myself to be calm was mainly because my experience with medical care is that if I act anxious, everyone treats me like I'm incompetent. And since pregnant people are already often treated like they're incompetent, I was extra worried.
Anyway! For many people, health care is filled with medical professionals disbelieving, mistrusting, misleading, and outright lying to you. In the US, prenatal care is very much like this (consider hiring a doula!). Fin!
