A Star Studded Free Agent Class: Chris Godwin Spotlight
(Thread 2)
Chris Godwin enters his first free agency as one of the most polarizing WRs to hit the market, let’s break this down and see what the next steps are for Chris Godwin⬇️
Chris Godwin enters his free agent period at the age of 24 (will be 25 in February). He comes in to this offseason as one of the best young assets and has shown us elite level play in his time in Tampa.
Chris Godwin finished WR31 this year, totaling 65 catches, 840 yards, and 7 TDs. He found himself in a loaded offense, with a lot of mouths to feed. Tom Brady brought in his boys in Antonio Brown and Rob Gronkowski this year to help Tampa push towards a Super Bowl.
While only missing 6 games in his 4 year career, he’s managed to stay healthy and produce when called upon. In 2019 he saw 121 targets, which turned into 86 catches in an offense that was led by Jameis Winston. He has proven to us he can put up WR1 numbers.
But can he prove to the NFL GMs he can be a true alpha #1 without a guy like Mike Evans next to him? He has elite level route running, with precise cuts, but has struggled to correct his drop problem, which has shown its ugly head a multitude of times.
With a career catch % of 68.7, he needs to improve on his short yardage catches and be that trusty guy his QB can turn to to make a catch. He’s had two WR3 seasons, in 2018 and 2020. Can he repeat his 2019 season?
I don’t believe Godwin actually repeats those numbers, as it took over 120 targets for him to surpass 240 fantasy points in 2019. I don’t see a situation where Godwin will demand 120 targets, no matter where he goes.
This isn’t to say he can’t be a solid WR2, but to expect another top 5 season is probably out of the question. He would need to demand a huge chunk of targets while also turning those plays into YAC and TDs.
He’ll demand a decent sized check on the market, and with a few teams needing WR depth he’s got a few options to take his talents too. (video via: @NFLonFOX)
DET, NYJ, JAX, and NE all intrigue me as potential landing spots for Godwin. All 4 teams head into this offseason with some major questions, and addressing WR in FA would add some much needed firepower to these offenses. I don’t see him heading back to Tampa.
Tampa has pieces already, and if Brady plans to play again in 2021, you’d have to expect AB and even Gronk would be returning. This isn’t a situation Godwin wants to be in, he wants to be that true #1 or high end #2. In Tampa, it would be hard for Godwin to get his money and play
Chris Godwin will look to repeat his 2019 campaign, and with a huge offseason ahead of us Godwin will look to join a team that can use his talent and bring Godwin back to top WR status. (video via: @NFLonFOX)
Chris Godwin sits at WR17 in my dynasty rankings, as it’s a big reach hoping for him to put up top 5 numbers, but should put up numbers to find himself anywhere from WR10-WR34. Chris Godwin is a major hold this offseason, as where he signs will be a big teller for owners.
In this play Godwin uses his sharp route running and size to find the end zone, showing us he can make just about anyone miss and can get those extra yards due to his size. (video via: @NFLonFOX)
Chris Godwin is my #1 WR in this free agent class, and depending on landing spot could be a bargain buy for what he could bring to the table. His hands need work still, but with his route running and size it’s a good investment for just about any team.
Thanks for reading! I hope this gave you a little more information about Godwin! Thoughts and shares are appreciated!
