A Friday Thread! Bob Dylan said “We sit here stranded, though we’re all doin’ our best to deny it.” There’s a little light that is gradually brightening at the end of the COVID tunnel, so here’s a little thread of ideas on how we can all keep motoring through the next few weeks
1/ Keep mentally active. Easier said than done when you’re stuck at home with nothing to do but what are some ideas you have to get out of a mental rut? I try to keep it small - making food, doing jigsaws, making aperitivo hour with great snacks a ritual
2/ But take your time. The Great Pause is an opportunity for us to step back, switch off from the constant ping of social media and rushing around in crowds. What are some ways you can take time to appreciate nature, make space in your mind, rest and recharge?
3/ Put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. First priority is always to get yourself in shape and healthy. What help and support can you call on to build up your mental resilience and physical wellbeing ready for the opportunities to come?
4/ Find a purpose. What values do you have that help you decide where you spend your time and effort? Imagine money and fame are unimportant, what can you do today to connect to the world with your heart as well as with your head?
5/ Be kind. My friend and mentor
@pinkylilani
CBE says “you have not lived a perfect day unless you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” What can you do today for someone who is struggling more than you?
6/ Prepare the ladder. We are in a hole today and not yet able to climb out, but we are busy building our ladder.
@ariannahuff
talks about #microsteps. What small steps could you take to build your ladder and get yourself closer to the surface?
7/ Find your superpower. When things come back, what’s going to make you stand out from the crowd? Software programmers call it INABIAF – “It’s Not A Bug, It’s A Feature”. How can you focus on what makes you unique and make that a real strength?
8/ Create. Make something however small. Just because you can't be in a rehearsal room doesn't mean you can't make something that sparks joy. Come up with 99 terrible ideas and maybe 1 great one. Maybe just don't tell your agent about ALL of them.
9/ Be honest. Yes it’s been awful and it’s not over yet. It’s ok to feel down, you’re not alone. But 2021 is also the start of recovery. Rebirth. Opportunity. Can you imagine the parties we will have to celebrate re-opening? I'm looking forward to that first press night drink!
10/ Imagine. When things are open again, where will you be? What will you be doing? Who will you be with? How will you feel? What needs to happen between now and then for you to get there? What can you do today to start on that path? Manifest your journey.
11/ Our industry will be the director, the narrator, the composer of the soundtrack of emotional release when we all step back into the world. There will be cheering and also very many tears. What role are you going to play in that incredible production?
12/ I don’t have any quick fixes or simple solutions. But I do know that we are not alone, we are more powerful together than apart. And I believe that the power of art and storytelling will continue to triumph over any existential threat, as it has done for thousands of years.
13/ With love, Mildred (and Mochi) xxx Looking forward to hearing from you all about your ideas!
