. @TimothyDSnyder accurately links the demise of local news to the rise in populism & extremism in the #USA
Today’s #Times leader takes up the debate Snyder so elequently advanced on yesterday’s @BBCr4today (on Sounds).
The problem exits in Britain too.
I trained as a journo on a local paper (Alloa advertiser) & worked as a reporter&presenter in local TV news (Grampian & Central News East). Readers, viewers & let’s not forget listeners to local radio, trust their local news media because its embedded in their community...
..reporting stories on their doorstep. Traditionally reporters, presenters & editors were journos who reported without fear, favour or bias. Too many local papers have closed & huge cuts to the number of journos across all local media has meant fewer local stories get published.
Remarkable advances in technology & end of restrictive practises failed to save local news. Ironically (& disgracefully IMO) the BBC’s axed yet more posts in local TV news & radio - despite excellent ratings during the pandemic - reiterating the trust people have in local news.
Too many local newspapers have been unable to adapt to on line competition. It’s complex but we can and must restore local news if we’re willing to make the effort - if for no other reason than for the sake of our democracy.
