Once we decided to close school there was never any: What is the backup plan?
It was just sorta like:
-Women quit jobs?
-Expose grandparents?
-Do daycare and accept risk anyway?
-Maybe leave kids unsupervised?

We did remote school for a whole year still got corona, paid pretty high economic price (born by me) and ALSO exposed a grandparent.
So total clusterfuck all around.

And when parents were like YO WE CAN'T JUST DO THIS -- everyone was like "why do you want teachers dead!!?"
Just like slap in the face after slap in the face.
NOBODY can be the sole childcare provider for their children 24/7 for 10 months. That was never a feasible plan.

There is this real kind of sexist magical thinking around this issue I think
