Break Out Age

aka BOA

How successful have wide receivers been without having one?

@TheUndroppables
Out of 980 wide receivers on the Player Profiler data base...

There are a bunch without a BOA

Some played other positions (ie. Greg Ward was a QB) therefore no BOA.

Some didn't do enough to qualify (Henry Ruggs, Travis Benjamin) - many attribute this to team competition.
All in all 198 out of 980 don't have a BOA

That is pretty significant if you think about it.

20.2% in fact.
Who has made a significant splash in the NFL after not doing so in college?

players like Greg Ward, Russell Gage, Martavis Bryant, Chris Hogan, Adam Humphries, Robert Foster, & Terrelle Pryor have had "a season" or "a stretch" maybe been "serviceable" but hardly significant.
Therefore...not many.

Danny Amendola has been a journeyman and has been consistently mediocre and has had a long career but he's never been a fantasy football league winner.
In fact only three have had an impact:

1. Julian Edelman
2. Tyreek Hill
3. Terry McLaurin
Julian Edelman was a 7th round pick who wasn't even a wide receiver at Kent State.

He was konami code QB. But wasn't good enough to be one at the NFL level.

He switched to WR and turned out to be significant.
Tyreek Hill's BOA is slightly misunderstood as he wasn't a pure WR either. A 5th round pick b/c of his athleticism & versatility.

He was a RB/WR combo at Oklahoma State in 2014
& at West Alabama in 2015.

Not quite a WR; not quite an RB - a bit of both.

He's been stellar.
So out of the almost 200 players without a BOA, Terry McLaurin is definitely an outlier. He was drafted in the 3rd round and really cleared the way for others to follow.

Fast, thick, good route runner, stood out at the Senior Bowl.
Many gave him a pass on account he played with many talented WRs at Ohio State.

However, he's the only one to have made an impact from that group.

The most amazing thing is he's done it with poor QB play.

Truly a feat within itself.
He paved the way for Henry Ruggs, a 1st round player who played at Alabama. Ruggs was the first WR off the board and after one season looks to be more like a bust. To be fair, he's only had one season, plays with a QB that does not fit his wheel house but are those just excuses?
Ruggs is only the third 1st rounder apart from Travis Taylor & Tavon Ausin who was also drafted at 10th overall and Tavon Austin who was the 1.08. Taylor never eclipsed 900 yards in one season and is a bust. Austin is more of a bust is now considered an RB.
Most others were UDFAs. A few 2nd rounders (Mecole Hardman, Devin Hester), a few 3rd rouders (Marquise Goodwin, Laveranues Coles & Braxton Miller)

Coles would be the 4th best of this group without a BOA. In many ways he was a success.

3 seasons +1000 yards in 11 seasons
Many have the same lightning speed.

Goodwin 4.27
Ruggs 4.27
Hardman 4.33
Austin 4.34

But apart from one good season from Goodwin...nada
Many of us were down on Ruggs in 2020 & it is looking more like he won't breakout.

At least Hardman has Mahomes and if Sammy Watkins leaves there's a glimmer of hope.

But even with that the odds are against him.

Might be worth trying to get him since his value is very low.
if you can get Hardman for a mid to late third, it might be worth the gamble.

But remember the 2021 class is deep at WR so proceed with caution. (dyami brown unc👇)
We can be having the same conversation a year from now when Ruggs' value continues to tank.

Again, by then even a 3rd might not be worth it.
