I've been reading Col. William G. Moore's diaries he kept during Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial. He was Johnson's appointed personal assistant during Johnson's failed presidency.
Two things of note:
One: Johnson had an excuse for every charge against him. He could paint himself as the victim and the hero at every point. Conversations were constantly derailed so that Johnson remained the center of focus and attention.
Two: His assistant drank from the same well. Moore's diaries are, on the surface, a general description of accounts as they happened.
But Moore's dedication to Johnson signals his succumbing to Johnson's interpretation of reality.
Moore also believed Johnson was the victim/hero
Also noteworthy: the amount of conciliation and attempts to do things the right way afforded from his supposed political enemies. Specifically Grant and Sherman. These military officers were desperate for transparency.
But Johnson couldn't decide if he wanted southern approval or not. He wanted to punish the former slave-holders and the insurrectionists. He also wanted their approval. Did you know Johnson recommended an additional military district for Reconstruction that included DE and WV?
