I profiled Cleveland Grover Meredith Jr., the Georgia man who was among the first charged, one week ago today, in connection with the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. 1/ https://www.newyorker.com/news/us-journal/the-georgia-dad-who-said-that-he-wanted-to-kill-nancy-pelosi
Among Meredith's texts in early January that got the FBI's attention (along w/ his guns & ammo):
-"Burn DC to the FKG ground"
-"I'm gonna collect a shit ton of traitors heads"
-“Thinking about heading over to Pelosi CUNT’s speech and putting a bullet in her noggin on Live TV.” 2/

Car trouble slowed Meredith down on his way to D.C. He arrived late to the insurrection. But that didn't stop him from allegedly committing at least one assault, as described by a lawyer for the government in a pre-trial detention hearing yesterday: 3/
I spoke to a dozen ppl who've known Meredith—a private-schooled, wealthy, adrenaline junkie & dad—thru-out his life. Opinions varied. A few felt his threats were in jest—that he's "stupid," & "a cosplaying Patriot." Another compared him to Travis Bickle from "Taxi Driver." 4/
Most were resigned to his guilt, despite questions about his mental health. He'd been immersed in Gateway Pundit, Fox News, Trump's Twitter feed, and QAnon. One lifelong friend said, "Trump fucked Cleve’s life. Lost his family, his marriage, his mind, and now his freedom.” 5/
On a typographical note, this may be the first New Yorker story to feature the purple devil emoji, which Meredith frequently appended to his texts
