thread of things i highlighted from lou sullivan: daring to be a man among men
context: lou sullivan (1951-1991) was an influential gay trans man activist who kickstarted the first international communities for transmasc ppl & created social + medical awareness of gay trans men

this spoke *directly* to my soul as i stanned the beatles & other classic rock stars as a tween & emulated them + shipped them as a (unbeknownst to me then) way to express my interest in masculinity and masculine love
this is SO...it speaks so much to the anxieties transmascs have about our own identities somehow being a way to "cop out" of something
tw transmisogyny, transphobia
on lesbian feminism in the 70s - context is that lou's participation in a gay peoples union lesbian meeting led to him arguing in favor of trans women & gnc people + helping bridge the gap in his community between lesbian groups and trans groups

very relevant to the ways cishet men prey on transmascs & force us into states of detransition to this day

again - society is so invested in gaslighting trans men into staying the "women" we're "supposed" to be
and here we are yet again trying to divide the community up into distinct sectioned categories and letting people who need help but dont quite fit existing parameters slip right through the cracks

ahhhhhhhhhg emotions
the two projects referenced are publishing his diary and publishing his book on jack bee garland, a gay trans man from the 1800s/1900s

about how transmasculine identity moved beyond stealthing/trying to conform to cis masculinity, and instead creating specifically transmasculine masculinities. i also think some transmascs' connections to lesbian communities is relevant to acknowledgements of "female pasts"
i have a lot more highlights but this is what made sense to share! this is a *fraction* of the amazing content in this book, please buy + read it. btw if anyone reading knows where to find old copies of ftm international newsletters or any old transmasc texts at all please lmk
i'll b reading lou's help book for trans men (information for the female-to-male crossdresser and transsexual) soon so i'll share some from that at some point too
