1. So important the new care review chair @JoshMacAlister recognises that no person, charity or lobby group has the knowledge, skills or mandate to represent the care experienced community. It is massively diverse, of all ages and very widely spread>
2. "Experts by experience" are each individually experts in their own care, but have no expertise to speak for the care community unless speaking as part of & with that community. We care experienced folk are legion, nobody speaks for us.>
3. This is a real opportunity to reach out & speak to us as a community. It can be done. @Careexpconf did it face to face, & @OurCareOurSay2 & @TheBlackCareExp have done it recently on line. Reaching out to our wider community can be done with the will >
4. Important to recognise that the care community is all of us with care experience. Those in care, leaving care, old timers like me, those in custody, those in health care settings, those on the streets...the invisible ones. We're all experts by experience. Reach out to us all.>
5. Don't rely on charities, lobby groups or other agencies to contact care experienced folk for you. With the best will in the world, they can filter & 'decant' the information you get. Get your team to speak to us directly. And please don't rely on bloody questionnaires...>
6. Most importantly, be honest, be transparent, be inclusive & reach out. The responses will be worth it. Don't mislead or break promises to the care community or you will lose them for ever. There is very little trust in the Care Review already. Good luck - you will need it.
