WHO IS CHITRAGUPT? HOW CHITRAGUPT FOUND PLACE AT YAMLOK FOR MAINTAINING RECORDS

This story is based in Pushkaravart established by Brahma. To protect this place, Bhairav appointed Kankal Bhairav as its Kshetrapal.
To the south of this Brahmkund is where Chitraditya( Chitragupt) resided who is said to be the destroyer of poverty.

In ancient times a pious Kayastha named Mitra resided here. He had a son and daughter named Chitra and Chitraa. Unfortunately Mitra expired.
Both the siblings were bought up by the Rishi's who inculcated a deep religious spirit in them.

Once they went to Prabhaas Kshetra and established Suryadev there.
They devotedly worshipped the Surya as per rituals and would recite the strotras of sixty eight names of Surya which actually was about praising Surya and were written by Vashishtha . These strotras sang praises of Surya.

Chitra was person of pure heart and soul.
So Suryadev appeared before him and told Chitra to ask for a boon. So Chitra requested Suryadev that he desired that he be completely interested in the work alloted to him and the ability to the work successfully and efficiently. He was granted the boon.
After getting this boon he efficiently carried out his work.

On learning about this, Dharmaraj who had been desiring for a such an able person, wished that such an efficient person should help him maintain the records.
One day when Chitra(Chitragutpa) was bathing in Agni tirth, that time a Yamdoot carried him up to Yamlok. There he came to be known as CHITRAGUPT. Because of Suryadev's boon he also is known as Chitraditya. He still continues to maintain records of Yamlok.
