I gave birth at the end of November to a very sick baby girl. As a councillor I have no entitlement to maternity leave. I spent precious time while she was in the NICU worrying about not having any official leave and what I would do if she came home very sick 1/ https://twitter.com/maryeregan/status/1350027713051033606
Given that I wasn't able to take leave. She passed away a few weeks later. Women in ordinary jobs who experience a late term neonatal death or stillbirth are entitled to maternity leave to heal physically and grieve. I am not. 2/
The lack of maternity leave for women public representatives is awful in ordinary circumstances where all goes well and a healthy baby is delivered. It is downright traumatic when things go wrong. The Minister is absolutely right to make this stand for herself and other women.
