Thread for anyone interested in how @OpenUniversity teaching works. This batch of materials is one among several components of a painstakingly-constructed module which students will study part-time over 9 months (usually six modules make up an undergrad degree). 1/ https://twitter.com/emmabridges/status/1350000440180666370
It takes around *two years* from conception to the first delivery of a single module. In that time a whole team of academics, support staff, editors, external consultants, tech specialists, learning designers work on devising, writing, redrafting, formatting materials. 2/
There may be 20+ people involved at different stages. I chaired a team producing an @OU_Classics module for two years and it is a huge amount of work and a true team effort. 3/
The module books in the pic are just one component - there will also be online resources, videos, podcasts, discussion forums for students etc etc. It is all built from scratch and informed by academic subject expertise. 4/
But the academic knowledge is only a small part of it. The @OpenUniversity has decades of experience what works for distance learners - creating a scaffolded learning experience, structuring assessments, supporting those studying flexibly or who have particular learning needs. 5/
Students are all supported by their own tutor (Associate Lecturer) as they work through their study materials - that's the job I'll be doing on this module. We deliver live tutorials (online or in person when there's not a pandemic), 6/
support and mark assignments, provide pastoral support and all the encouragement you'd expect of a tutor in a brick university. There are also teams who provide additional support for eg students learning from prison, those have specific needs because of a disability etc 7/
