In 2019-20 our CBs gave cheaply away the ball in their own final third quite frequently which led to many goals being conceded from mistakes.The pic below shows a lapse of concentration in our defence,Bruno chips the freekick but no one tracks Martial's run who eventually scores.
This season City are rarely giving away the ball cheaply at the back.They don't make mistakes anymore and Ruben is a vocal leader who ensures there's no lapse of concentration at the back
In 2019 we had too many players pushing higher up the pitch,when the opponent did an counter attack we were left 2v2 in most cases with 3 more City players rushing back.The positioning of Fernandinho in the pic below is not impressive, he should have been more close to Rashford.
in 2020-21 we always have 3 at the back with 2 players rushing back,while the number of players defending(5) is same but the arrangement is better with 3 at the last line.Dias is aware of Rashford lurking in the wing that's why he doesn't get close to Martial and Pogba 
in 19-20 balls in behind had been a problem for City,just look at Walker , he's applying no pressure to stop the cross even though Stones is tracking Mane and he doesn't need to stick with Mane anymore. Fernandinho gets beaten by Salah's pace here and Salah scores.
In this match(2-0 win vs Man Utd 2021), Foden tracks Wan Bissaka all the way from Man Utd's final third,he applies pressure to Wan Bissaka and thus he couldn't give a good cross, Stones positions himself expertly to cut out the aerial delivery and clear the danger.
in 2019-20 the positioning of our defenders was poor,Spurs could bring the ball from wide out right into the centre fairly easily, again the positioning of Fernandinho wasn't good and our midfielders seem to be daydreaming here ,no one's tracking Eriksen at all.
2020-21: Unlike our previous defenders Dias isn't shy to engage with an attacker high up the pitch,he bullies Martial to go wide and with a lunge forces the ball out for a throw-in.Martial has a lot of pace but Dias' intelligent positioning meant he couldn't use it.
Conclusion: Along with Pep ,Dias and Stones deserve a lot of credit, especially Dias because he can read the game so well.They put their body on the line for blocking shots,they never get their last ditch tackles wrong, aerially superb and rarely foul in a dangerous area.
