An important concept to understand with Game UX is that User Interaction and Feedback Design in games spans beyond a UI screen for both UI Designers and UX Designers.
Here are some examples:
UX ingame example: User needs to know where buried items are, a visual cue, VFX, animation or sound would play just at the right time or intensity to help a player understand where to look.
UX ingame example: User needs to understand their damage was impactful and against what body armor type and whether they’ve managed a headshot. UI iconography, color coding, well timed and varied audio and HUD feedback all contribute to this experience
UX Ingame example: User needs to feel a great sense of excitement and reward through feedbacks on a real world money purchase or soft currency/ingame reward, especially on special item reveals. VFX, sound, dialogue, coloring, impactful 3d anims all play towards that.
UX ingame example: User needs to understand where they need to go in a world so they can travel to their destination. A large pillar of light through vfx is used to help guide the player.
UX ingame example: User needs to quickly see how much ammunition they have in their weapon without losing immersion. Numbers are represented inside the game world on the 3D model, color change is used as feedback. This ammunition is reinforced on the HUD for more clarity.
Ingame UX example: User needs to understand they have either taken critical damage or near dying, meta screenbased effects are played to help reinforce this experience. This is usually done through imagery and scripted screen effects.
Ingame UX example: User has hearing impairment but must understand that certain items emit sound, this is shown through little zig zag lines coming out of the radio. Without using words you know what a character is thinking through symbology above their head.
Ingame UX example: Your character is having a narrative flashback and this important story beat needs to be communicated to you. This is done through projecting lights of a disco ball onto another environment and playing music and dialogue without the need of UI.
These are only a few examples, would love to see examples from other folks!
