#Thread for Postgraduates in medical colleges
Why and how much are teachers important at the postgraduation level ?
Today we had an interesting situation during rounds. A patient admitted since a week for a fracture was not fit for surgery due to anemia.
He has two fractures in same limb which requires different approaches & positioning for surgery. When I asked my postgraduates about the planning for this patient, they were at loss to provide me a rational plan. However, they were quite thorough with the surgeries per se
I absolutely don't judge them in any way for the lacunae of practical knowledge which comes to a certain extent with experience. My only grouse is that the accessibility to knowledge resources which today's students have at their finger tips should make them more competent.
The possible reasons for anemia, the preparation for surgery, the instructions to anesthesia team, the post op care are what was required to be read up, understood & discussed among themselves in those 5 days when patient has been lying in the ward.
But I guess there lies the downfall. Since the access is so easy, it is taken for granted . It is also imperative that the teachers should also be able to discuss patient management which is applicable to local needs & titre n distill the info apart from what is already in books
In today's world of huge info deluge, a teacher guides you to right resources to channelize learning in more productive ways. That is the teacher's role in higher education. Skill training is an other area where they have to hand hold. When both of these blend well, its a win win
I am completely aware of the gross discrepancies in PG education across departments & across various colleges. This group is the most neglected one in terms of hand holding when needed. But then, even adults need nurture and care !
