Fairfax ,Murdoch just hated competition from new technology. Even after the ABC's first broadcast in 1932 they continued to undermine the ABC by stopping broadcast news bulletins at times that competed with newspaper publication
Murdoch August 1932 that's just a month after the ABC was established -“The evidence we have gathered convinces us that further serious damage would be done to the prestige and circulation of newspapers” These attempts continued until 1947 when ABC news began
And if Sinclair Davidson had done some historical research he would find that the world in 1932 wasn't that different – there wasn't a media shortage . The ABC without much funding competed with commercial radio and newspapers funded by advertising
