One reason it's so easy to feel pessimistic about America these days is that it's got a superpower state, but as a society it is going through a bit of a thing right now. The society part you feel in your bones, because we are humans.
I don't think anybody really knows how to "fix" a society, and fixing the state is the rational substitution, especially in a successful self-governing country. But it's still a substitution, though it is by necessity.
The "state" part, btw, is not exactly Israel's strong point. So maybe this is by necessity too! Friends who've made aliyah say going into the army is hard but dealing with the Israeli bureaucracy is the *real* national service.
