It sounds to me like Canada is going to have to step up its game if they want to compete with Biden's financial agenda of lifting people out of poverty. The Child Tax Benefit that was introduced under the LPC was a great start, but until all Canadians are lifted above the...
...poverty line, and can afford to both eat and have a roof over their heads, we will need to do better (to quote the PM).

When is the PM going to roll out his 'Build Back Better' plan? Of course he can't wait now that Biden's rolled out his. :)
No one who lives in poverty through no fault of their own, should not live in poverty. How's that for a tongue twister? Of course I am talking about Indigenous peoples and people with disabilities. What on God's green earth did these beautiful human beings do to anyone...
...to deserve a life of punishing poverty?
If memory serves, the MMIW report recommends Canada implement a livable basic income to lift vulnerable people out of poverty. I can't see any other plan that could be more reasonable than this. It saves money, and improves the economy.
Unlike what stupid people like @fordnation would have you believe, basic livable income does NOT disincentivise people from finding and keeping a job. Studies show it has the opposite effect. It motivates people, boosts morale, lessens stress and improves physical health...
...because people can actually afford to choose better food for themselves.
I still remember one of my ODSP clients saying to me, "When I wake in the morning, the first thing I do, after it dawns on me that my whole existence has changed so much, and not for the good, is vomit. This is my new morning ritual. How can I think about anything else but...
...money? You think about what you don't have, and it consumes you to a point you feed paralysed and when you reach that point, you are paralysed from doing anything to help yourself."

It's true.
That statement has haunted me for years now, and it is one of the reasons I started pushing for a livable income for vulnerable people. If anyone can see what people like this go through, they'd be pushing for it too.
