A note for the perplexed: Biden called for $2,000 covid checks. The Republican Congress instead passed $600 checks. So now Biden is calling to add $1400 checks to get to his original $2000 goal. He hasn't changed his number, just been forced to do it in two different bills.
In any case, here's a good detailed @mattyglesias rundown of everything in Biden's proposed relief bill, which extends WAY beyond individual checks: https://www.slowboring.com/p/meet-the-american-rescue-act https://twitter.com/Yair_Rosenberg/status/1349866515814879232
I think some are because they've seen the $1400 number thrown around and they're understandably confused. Others know better but are being deliberately misleading in order to present Biden as going back on his word, when he didn't, which in turn confuses more folks. https://twitter.com/SamLauter/status/1349870854398566401
Here is noted neoliberal sellout Bernie Sanders arguing, like Biden, for raising the GOP Congress's $600 checks to $2000. This was always the proposal, and Biden is executing it, not changing it. https://twitter.com/nowthisnews/status/1344499270079037440
Here's why this all matters for people with progressive priorities: Biden did exactly what the left asked for on the $2000 checks. He copied Bernie's proposal from December! Attacking Biden for giving you what you want isn't going to incentivize him to do so in the future.
File this under: Bernie is better at politics than some of his stans on this site, a continuing series. https://twitter.com/JTHVerhovek/status/1349882872983908353
If you won't take the wins when Biden gives them to you, you make it less likely he will bother trying to work with you in the future.
The $2000 checks were a great progressive idea that most voters easily understood and helped Dems win the Senate. The left should be taking a victory lap and pocketing the cred, not hitting Biden for following their lead! https://twitter.com/Yair_Rosenberg/status/1349914102001508367
