It seems like a significant amount of the violence against officers in the Capitol was spurred on by the myth that they were "antifa". For years, right wing provocateurs like Alex Jones and Andy Ngo have sought to portray Antifa as a massive conspiracy.

Last year, false rumors that "antifa" were behind Oregon wildfires sent militia out to form armed checkpoints. Some police departments tried to stop the rumors. Some officers spurred them on.
Last summer a family in Washington was confronted by a mob for camping in a bus. Local residents were terrified by viral rumors that antifa were being bused in to destroy rural communities.
Much of the controversy was ginned up by this Fox News article, and a fake "Antifa" twitter account run by members of white supremacist org Identity Europa.
