I’ve spoken to 5 agency ex CEO’s who sold their agencies for a combined $100MM+ & 3 current CEO’s of agencies in the last 3 months.

All would do it again BUT nobody said they would start another agency. Here is the major reason why: (1/x)
Imagine you have a friend that goes to a restaurant & the food/service is great.

They come back next month and tell the Chef they would like better food, more food, & would like to pay less for it.

The Chef, a Giver who loves to cook, responds, “I like to cook, sure.”
Your friend, who needs to eat, comes back and does it again, and again, and again until the Chef might not even be making money off of them anymore.

The food does get even better & the restaurant starts winning awards, but your friend keeps wanting more food for less $.
Then, after months of this, one day the customer yells at your server because they were running 5 tables & brought the wrong drink. Now they want this meal to be free.
The server, a great server who rarely makes mistakes, was running 5 tables because they wanted to help the other staff, make more tips, & they know the restaurant doesn’t even make much money on some of their customers.
The Chef realizes your friend shouldn’t eat there anymore even though they want to eat there, so he talks to them & they say they’ll be nice but also don’t want to pay the menu price…
Have you ever been a regular at a restaurant?

I was at this family owned Italian place in Alphabet City & they treated me 100+.

They were my neighbors so I went there often and tipped above average. Said hi to them when I walked my dog.
Sometimes they’d be packed, walk in only, & they would add a table or skip other people to sit us, even when I told them I could wait.

Sometimes, the older woman that ran the bar would bring out a nice wine for us to try for free, chat.
They gave us above and beyond attention because we were kind & paid more than we needed to (on time).

When they were busy, we were still prioritized & top of mind.

If you’re still with me, you get the point…
I love to cook. I love to feed people.

But I became too cynical by serving the wrong customers for too long, which is ultimately my fault. I made this mistake & so did other people I spoke with.

That’s why all the ex CEO’s are building non client service based businesses.
If any agency folk (or other people) out there want to chat about the mistakes I made and/or mental health from running a company, DM me & I'm happy to help.

BTW… Tip your servers. Be a regular.
