*PUBLIC INQUIRY ON THE COVID RESPONSE*
when this is all over. #Covid19UK
What will those with large platforms who’ve consistently denied/minimised Covid say?
Those who’ve urged government not to act or act too late?
Will any apologise? be held to account?

Of course first and foremost the government should apologise & be held to account. It really didn’t have to turn out like it has, and it was preventable. Especially the 2nd/3rd wave:

Corruption & contracts for firms with no experience or expertise, working across not with existing public services with the relevant expertise. The government have massively failed to protect our health & economy.

However, the amount of misinformation spread by many who the government listen to (though clearly shouldn’t given the outcome) is astonishing.
Many even now still pushing these damaging lines as hospitals are overwhelmed and over 1000 people die from Covid every day.

Free speech you say? I’m sorry but there has to be checks, balances & responsibility when so many lives & the economy are on the line.

Yes the economy too, as late action means more economic harm. You’ve contributed to that too. And overly long school closures and the harm that’s done (again earlier action means no closures or shorter closures): https://twitter.com/timcolbourn/status/1349107712790044675?s=21

We should be debating policy implementation, not reality itself.

March: “we’re almost a herd immunity already no need to act” [no data at all to support this]
April: “time to lift restrictions as the peak is over”
[risk is clearly still very high]

Sep: “Sack Vallance & Whitty, they’re scaremongering saying there’ll be 200 deaths a day by Nov” [deaths are 5 times that now tragically, as many warned a lack of action would lead to]

Oct-Dec: “There NHS is always overwhelmed” “There is/will be no excess mortality this winter” [excess mortality is very high now with Covid deaths as much as all other causes put together]

Throughout: “it’s only flu” “they’re only old people” “they all have pre-existing conditions” “long Covid doesn’t exist”
[wrong, heartless and morally bankrupt especially as ‘saving the economy’ goes hand in hand with saving health via early action – see above]

Predictably some are already trying to get out of any responsibility for the mess we are in: https://twitter.com/neildotobrien/status/1349701110588710916?s=21

To be clear, as someone who has been publicly calling for action on Covid since mid-March (& before though no-one was listening then) I would be happy to testify at the public inquiry too.
