When John Wesley described humans before the fall, the first two qualities he names are "the power of distinguishing truth from falsehood" so that "truth and evidence went hand in hand" and "Love filling the whole expansion of [the] soul, possessing [us] without rival." /1
It's not like we needed more evidence that the world is fallen, but when I look around today, it seems that these two qualities are demonstrably distorted. /2
The inability to distinguish truth from falsehood and the failure of allowing love to guide every movement of the heart look like two twins of chaos set loose in the midst of the church and the world. /3
At the same time, the central theme and commanding hope of Wesley's theology was the restoration of the image we've lost. For those joining Wesley in his work of proclaiming this gospel, keep it up. /4
Remember that it is God's faithful work "to collect the scattered beams of that affection which is truly human, truly divine, and fix them on that Sovereign Good 'in whom we live and move and have our being.'" There's freedom in that, friends. Keep going. /5
