This poem was used as evidence by the communist prosecutors in the 1958 treason trial of Romanian poet and journalist Radu Gyr. Gyr was aligned in his youth with the nationalist movement Legion Of Archangels Michael & Gabriel.

Radu Gyr's first stint in prison lasted 1 year and happened during the pro-fascist regime of Gen. Ioan Antonescu, who aligned Romania with Nazi Germany. After one year behind bars he was freed on parole and sent to fight on the Eastern front in WWII.
Sending political dissidents on the front lines to be killed was one of the methods used by the fascist Antonescu regime government to punish former members of the Legion. Radu Gyr returned home a disabled veteran after he was wounded in battle.
In 1958 the communist authorities were in full swing with their plans to collectivize Romanian agriculture. The government was confiscating all farming land from the farmers and landowners and pushing everybody into CAPs -collective agricultural production farms.
As expected, there was a lot of resistance all over the country from those peasants and farmers who were losing their ancestral land and way of living. Revolts were popping up everywhere. Tens of thousands of unarmed people were massacred in cold blood in order for the collectivist dream of the Romanian communists to succeed. The person in charge of coordinating the repression was none other than the future communist Party leader and Romanian President, Ceausescu
Gyr was arrested, tried sentenced to death because he wrote a poem dedicated to those peasants and farmers imprisoned and massacred by the communists. The poem was considered subversive and inciting insurrection so the communists couldn't tolerate that.
The poem asked for peasants and Romanians at large, given generic names, to rise against the communist dictatorial regime: it is primarily a poem pleading for freedom. Romanians, generically named George and John, are called upon to arise and fight for freedom.
The similarities with events happening in 2020 America are striking; today Democrats, their lap dog Marxist journalists and their Silicon Valley allies cannot tolerate criticism which they consider threats to their socialist supremacy.
This is why they had to de-platform conservative social media accounts, silence Trump and kill independent platforms like Parler.

At the pressures made by Western countries, the communists commuted Radu Gyr's death sentence to life in prison. He served 16 years in which despite of suffering from hepatitis, TB, hemophilia and gangrene, he was refused any medical assistance and was starved and tortured.
