I left a job because my boss said I was disrespectful and didn’t participate in meetings. She said she didn’t like my tone and I rolled my eyes when she spoke. She accused me of being unprofessional. I am unfailingly polite, I’m just reserved when I don’t know people personally.
If she’d bothered to stop being a racist, antisemitic, P*lish lady, she might have focused more on my work than the things she didn’t like about my personality, or actually, my cultural behaviours. I was always a high performer, and she’d praise my work, but that didn’t matter.
She didn’t like that I didn’t eat lunch with everyone (I’m kosher and couldn’t) and didn’t participate in conversations (I didn’t know what they were talking about). So I got pressured by HR into leaving, esp after I complained that she asked invasive questions about my life.
I now work directly with a much younger man who is neurodivergent and grew up in a more reserved society (U.K.), so my introversion has never been brought up. It’s made all the difference in how I’m seen in the workplace.
