The recent emergence of several concerning variants - in the UK, South Africa, and Manaus- all in areas of high transmission further highlights the dangers of allowing unchecked transmission across large swathes of the population.

And if you want to see what's happening in Manaus now, after an estimated 76% of the population has been infected. Is R below 1? No, they're experiencing a surge that is overwhelming their health systems. And they have a new variant with mutations shared with the UK & SA variants
It's clear that even infection of such a large proportion of the population didn't lead to 'herd immunity' and didn't reduce R below 1.
