Our allotted time for negotiation is running out. Since APMG is still trying to exclude our Media Production colleagues from our union, we’re headed to a hearing with the NLRB tomorrow.
SAG-AFTRA tells us they've organized 10 public media newsrooms in the past five years — the last organizing effort that actually went to a hearing was our colleagues at @MprApmUnion. There’s a reason for that: NLRB hearings take a lot of time and money.
Then and now, APMG is represented by Jones Day. It’s one of the nation’s largest law firms, notorious for its aggressive union-busting tactics. https://www.cjr.org/analysis/jones-day-unions-slate-strike.php
In 2018, @SlateUnion nearly went on strike because negotiations with Jones Day got so toxic. The same thing happened a year earlier at @wemakeNPR, leading management there to finally cut ties with the firm. https://twitter.com/hberkes/status/1349442203194515456
Now some newsrooms, like the Boston Globe, are urging their employers to drop Jones Day for another reason: They represented President Trump in several lawsuits seeking to overturn the 2020 election. https://today.westlaw.com/Document/I23ce2e2029e011eba33de565a7fd857e/View/FullText.html?transitionType=SearchItem&contextData=(sc.Default)
In fact, Jones Day has represented the Trump campaign or the Republican Party in around 20 lawsuits. Here's some more information about those ties, and the power that comes with them: https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/jones-day-election/
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit public media hard. But during @Marketplace's last fundraising drive, thousands of generous listeners donated more than $600,000 to support our work. That’s amazing.
We love our work and we want to show up for those @Marketplace Investors, but APMG leadership has chosen to retain Jones Day and drag on this costly effort to a fight off a union that an overwhelming majority of our colleagues support.
We’ll be back Friday with a link to the live online NLRB hearing. In the meantime, if you support us please let @JonMcTaggart, @davekansas, @marketplace leadership or their attorneys at Jones Day know!
Your support means so much to us. No matter what happens tomorrow we will be here, fighting for the union we deserve — one that includes our ENTIRE content team. ✊
