Sitting in on the @vandycft panel on overcoming the "busywork" dilemma facilitated by @julaine_fowlin, our new asst. director for instructional design. We have 88 people on the Zoom call. Popular topic!
On our #busyworkdilemma panel: Abby Parish, who teaches "broccoli" courses in nursing, courses that students have to take but aren't thrilled about; and Marshall Eakin, teaching an elective history course on revolution in Latin America.
Eakin: Moved the entire course online in the fall. Shifted all of his lecture material to recorded video, so Zoom sessions could focus entirely on discussion and engagement. #BusyworkDilemma
How many students are in Abby Parish's "broccoli" course? 400.

Yikes.

#BusyworkDilemma
Parish: Emphasizes "task value" of her assignments, that is, how the assignments point toward professional work her nursing students will do in the future. That comes through in her short lecture videos, prepping Ss for assignments. #BusyworkDilemma
Parish: Changed her course navigation this fall. Not just an index page listing all the content and activities for students, but at the bottom of each of those pages, pointers to the next step. Found this helped students stay in the flow better. #BusyworkDilemma
