Watching this and in his introduction it says his first year as head coach was 1984 and they won the National Championship. Pretty good first season on the job. Haha. Come on @WeAreAFCA...
Just for fun decided to live tweet my grandpa’s presentation. “After Virgil Carter left we got away from throwing the ball...” Remember coaches, if you believe in something, stick with it! Don’t go away from it for whatever reason, be true to what you believe will help you win!
“I had been coaching for 18 years, and had been associated with a winning record 4 of those years.”
In reference to dealing with the history of losing at BYU before he took over: “We had to change the image and the way we thought about ourselves.”
On throwing the football “we might as well going out there and do something differently, might as well because ain’t nothing else has worked. No matter who they’ve had there.”
“If you’re a have-not, you better start thinking a little out of the box. You better start being a little bit creative, you better start thinking of some new ideas.”
"First of all, you've gotta develop a philosophy. And that philosophy has to be based on who you are and what you are. I think it's alright to emulate traits in others, but certainly don't want to imitate them."
"There are those that have watched games and wonder what in the world I do, because I just stand around with my arms folded...my wife got on my back about putting on earphones to act like I'm involved. Even if you don't want to hook them in, get a fake set."
"I'm always amazed by offensive coaches, they're gonna have a first down on the 3 yard line going in to score and they ran 3 plays and made a yard and a half. They want to go for it on 4th Down. 'I just know we can make it', Well what have you done the other 3 downs."
"If you cannot develop trust with those that you work with, it's just not going to happen. You're not going to be able to get it done."
"I'll have no fewer than 3, sometimes 4 or more personal interviews with our players during the year. Most of the times when we talk it's not about football, it's about their personal lives."
"Execution is the key to everything we've done. We over prepare, we try and do a whole lot more than we ever try not to do enough"
in 2000, "I worry about the contracts. It bothers me that we can find the money to pay a lot of big bucks (for coaches contracts) but we can't find the money to give our players $100 for laundry or whatever else. And I'm afraid that his gap is widening." Again, in 2000!
"Whether you are at Ohio State University or Wittenberg, football is football. And it's important."
"I've never been particularly in favor of a playoff, but I'm not so sure that won't happen." Again, this talk was in 2000. "They talk about it being a cash cow in Division 1-A." He has been spot on here at the end.
Quoting somebody, "The two most important titles I've had are coach and father." After a game when I was younger, he was walking in front of our whole family after a game and we were trying to get his attention. "Grandpa!" nothing "Dad!" nothing. "Coach." he turned right around.
"My family, and my wife, meant every bit as much to me as this great game of football. I do believe we can get it done a whole lot quicker, than a lot of times we think we can." True words not just for football coaches, but people trying to balance work and life at home.
I miss this man. Great football coach, great family man, and great ambassador for the church and institution he represented. Fun to get to spend some time with him again this afternoon. #LaVell
