De Valera defended the gov's policy of neutrality during the war on the grounds that it was "better that the Spanish people should settle their differences free from outside interference and work out for themselves the form of Government most suited to their own ideals and needs"
The opposition (FG) wanted to stop recognising the Second Republic but he rejected this, pointing to the fact that the Vatican hadn't done so and they were attempting to be more Catholic than the Pope
