THREAD: It's a sorry state of affairs for snow lovers in DC as we are seeing arguably the biggest snow drought on record: http://wapo.st/3nJfebu (1/x)
It has been a record 694 days since we last saw 0.5" of snow or more on a calendar day in DC (2/x) (Graphic by @islivingston)
2020 saw the least snow on record (since 1888) in a calendar year in DC, just 0.2". The winter of 2019-2020 was the third least snowy with just 0.6." (3/x) (Graphic by @islivingston)
So far in the winter 2020-21, DC (as observed at Reagan National) has seen just a trace of snow. Normally we would have seen 4" by now. (4/x) (Graphic by @islivingston)
The lack of snow in the last 2 winters fits into a long-term trend toward declining snow in DC. In the late 1800s, we averaged about 21" per winter. That's now down to about 14". (5/x) (Graphic by @PostGraphics)
Cities which have seen more snow than DC in the last 2 winters just since Jan 1: Austin, Tex; Jackson, Miss; Vicksburg, Miss; Oklahoma City; Waco, Tex; Shreveport, La.; Madrid, Spain (6/x)
Snow forecast for the next 7-10 days from the European model is NOT promising for DC, though it could change (7/x)
To end on a positive note for snow lovers, next 4-5 weeks are historically snowiest time of year in DC when we have seen our biggest events. The pattern is not unfavorable for snow. We have seen years start off slowly like this one and still see accumulation. There is hope. (8/8)
